Sizing guide · Room by room

Find the right size, first time.

The right size makes a room feel finished; the wrong one makes it feel smaller. Here’s how to choose, room by room — with illustrations, a to-scale size chart and a quick calculator.

Anchor the seating.

The rug should pull your sofa and chairs together into one conversation area. When in doubt, go bigger — a rug that’s too small is the most common mistake we see.

Minimum: front two legs. At the very least, the front two legs of the sofa should sit on the rug — the more of the sofa it sits under, the better it looks.
Leave a border. Keep 30–60 cm of floor visible between the rug and the walls.
Wider than the sofa. Aim for a rug at least 15–20 cm wider than your sofa on each end.

Typical size — Most living rooms: 300 × 250 cm or 350 × 270 cm

Dining room: the rug extends 60 to 70 cm beyond the table so chairs stay on the rug when pulled out60–70 cm60–70 cmRUG EXTENDS 60–70 CM BEYOND THE TABLE ON EVERY SIDE

Room to pull out a chair.

Chairs should stay fully on the rug even when pulled out, so nobody catches a leg on the edge as they sit down.

Add 60–70 cm. Measure your table, then add 60–70 cm on every side.
Match the shape. Rectangular rugs under rectangular tables; round or square rugs under round tables.
Low pile is best. Flatter weaves and kilims make chairs easier to slide and crumbs easier to clean.

Typical size — 6-seat table: 250 × 300 cm · 8-seat: 250 × 350 cm

Bedroom: the rug sits under the lower two-thirds of the bed and extends 50 to 60 cm either side50–60 cm50–60 cm50+ cmRUG UNDER THE LOWER TWO-THIRDS OF THE BED

Soft underfoot, first thing.

Place the rug across the lower two-thirds of the bed so there’s somewhere soft to step every morning, leaving the bedside tables on the floor.

50–60 cm each side. The rug should extend at least this far beyond both sides of the bed.
Laid widthways. Turn the rug across the bed, stopping just short of the bedside tables.
Or use runners. In tighter rooms, a runner either side of the bed works beautifully.

Typical size — Most bedrooms: 300 × 250 cm · Double: 160 × 230 cm · King: 200 × 300 cm

Hallway: a runner leaves 10 to 15 cm of floor either side and stops short of each end10–15 cmRUNNER LENGTH — STOP 30–45 CM SHORT OF EACH ENDKEEP DOORS CLEAR OF THICK PILE — CHECK THE SWING

Lead the way in.

A runner should frame the hallway floor, not fill it. Leave a margin of floor either side and stop short of each end so the space feels long and generous.

10–15 cm either side. Choose a width that leaves a strip of floor visible along both walls.
30–45 cm from the ends. Stop the runner short of the front door and the end wall.
Check the doors. Make sure doors swing freely over the rug, especially thicker piles.

Typical size — Most hallways: 70–80 cm wide, 200–400 cm long
