About Runners
A good hallway runner does double duty: it protects the floor and makes the space look properly finished. At The Rug Shed, our runner collection includes a range of genuinely handmade pieces in kilim, Persian, tribal and contemporary styles — each one selected to look as good in a narrow hallway as it would in any other part of the house.
Kilim runners are among our most popular: flat-woven, hard-wearing and available in lengths that suit most hallways. Their bold geometric designs and relatively low pile make them practical for high-traffic areas while still being visually compelling. For a more traditional look, Persian-style runners in hand-knotted pile bring richness and warmth to a corridor or landing. And for a more contemporary space, abstract or modern designs in longer formats offer a clean, graphic alternative.
When choosing a runner, proportion matters. As a general rule, leave at least 10–15cm of bare floor on either side of the runner, and choose a length that suits the full run of the space. For staircases, consider a flat-woven kilim runner, which tends to lie flat and is easier to fit than a thick pile rug.
All the runners at The Rug Shed are genuine handmade pieces — one-of-a-kind and sourced from the same regions as our full-size rugs. As specialists in handmade rugs based in Henley-on-Thames, we can advise on sizing and style to help you find the right piece for your space.
