Many of these rugs are made in the same countries and using the same methods as traditional Oriental rugs — hand-knotted in Iran, Afghanistan, India or Nepal — but with design briefs that break entirely with tradition. Erased rugs, for example, take a classic Oriental design and then wash and treat the finished rug to remove much of the pile and colour, leaving a ghostly, abstracted version of the original pattern. The result is something that reads as genuinely contemporary but carries the quality and texture of a handmade piece.
