How To Buy a Quality Rug?

Rugs are more than just floor coverings, they are pivotal in bringing a room together, sometimes even the statement piece. A quality modern rug adds comfort, warmth, and visual interest.

However, buying a quality rug can be a difficult task, here we will answer some of the questions you didn't know you needed to ask.

What is a Quality Rug Made From and Why We Love Wool!

Wool is a go-to choice for rugs, and there are several reasons for this.

Durability - Wool is naturally resilient and can bounce back from footprints and furniture impressions, making it ideal for high-traffic areas. High-quality wool rugs can last for decades upon decades with proper care. So long that, getting them professionally cleaned every 5-10 years is recommended.

Comfort and Warmth - Wool provides excellent insulation, making your space feel warm and cosy underfoot, especially during colder months.

Natural Stain Resistance - Wool fibres have a natural lanolin coating that repels dirt and liquids, making them easier to clean than synthetic options.

Sustainable Choice - Wool is a renewable and biodegradable resource, making it an eco-friendlier option than synthetic materials.

The Art of the Knot

A hand-knotted rug is a work of art crafted with meticulous attention to detail. That's what makes them special and unique. A hand-knotted rug is built knot by knot, little by little, and is one-of-a-kind. In contrast, a machine-made rug is glued or woven onto a backing leading to less quality and durability.

Due to strong construction and high-quality materials, hand-knotted rugs can withstand water, dirt, and heavy foot traffic for decades, so you will often see them passed down the generations.

You can identify a hand-knotted rug in a few different ways, the back of a hand-knotted rug will mirror the design on the front with the knots being visible. Its feel typically will be denser and with a more luxurious pile. My favourite way is to look for the imperfections, this is due to human error, the rug will not be a perfectly straight line, the knots will have slight variations in size and sometimes the weaver will run out of the same colour wool.

Modern Rugs and Decor

Modern rugs stand out with their unique character, bold and abstract designs, geometric shapes, asymmetrical lines and unexpected colour combinations that create dynamic and eye-catching statements.

Modern rugs also appeal to the minimalist, clean lines and simple shapes with colours finished to sit in the background.
